Butterfly Weft Extensions: Denver’s Newest Extension Method
If you follow the extensions world at all, you’ve probably seen butterfly wefts blowing up on Instagram and TikTok. They’re being called the fastest, most invisible extension method available — and after certifying our team and installing them on dozens of clients, we can confirm: the hype is warranted.
Here’s what butterfly weft extensions actually are, how they differ from everything else, and whether they’re right for your hair.
What Are Butterfly Weft Extensions?
A butterfly weft is a hair extension built on an ultra-thin polyurethane (PU) base instead of a traditional fabric weft. The PU base has precision-placed holes running through the center, which allow for a bead-through installation — no sewing needle, no thread, no adhesive.
The name comes from the way the weft opens during installation, resembling butterfly wings as the stylist threads beads through the holes. It’s a small detail, but it captures what makes this method different: elegance in engineering.
How Installation Works
Your stylist creates a bead foundation along a horizontal section near your scalp (similar to hand-tied weft prep). But instead of sewing a weft onto the beads with thread, the butterfly weft’s pre-made holes slide directly onto the beads. Your stylist clamps the beads securely, and the installation for that row is complete.
The result: approximately 20 minutes per row, compared to 30-45 minutes for a traditional hand-tied weft row. For a full installation, that time savings adds up significantly.
Every butterfly weft appointment at Fluff includes a wash and luxury blowout, so you leave looking finished — not like you just had a procedure done.
What Makes Them Different
Thinner and flatter. The PU base is significantly thinner than a hand-sewn weft. It lies closer to your scalp with virtually zero bulk. Clients consistently tell us they forget they’re wearing extensions within hours of installation.
Lighter weight. Less material at the attachment point means less weight pulling on your natural hair. This is a significant advantage for anyone with fine to medium density hair who found traditional wefts too heavy.
No sewing. Eliminating the needle and thread removes one of the most time-consuming (and skill-dependent) parts of weft installation. It also means no thread bulk at the attachment point.
Faster installation and removal. Installation is roughly 40% faster than hand-tied wefts. Removal is even faster — the beads simply unclamp and the weft slides off. This makes maintenance appointments quicker and more comfortable.
Butterfly Wefts vs. Hand-Tied Wefts
Since hand-tied wefts are our most popular method, this is the comparison most clients want:
Installation speed: Butterfly wefts are faster. Roughly 20 minutes per row vs. 30-45 minutes for hand-tied.
Weight: Butterfly wefts are lighter. The PU base weighs less than a hand-sewn fabric weft.
Profile: Butterfly wefts lie flatter. The thinner base creates less bulk at the attachment point.
Maintenance cycle: Butterfly wefts need maintenance every 4-6 weeks. Hand-tied wefts can go 8-10 weeks. So hand-tied wefts win on time between appointments.
Hair longevity: Both methods offer 6-12 months of hair life with proper care.
Best for: Butterfly wefts edge out hand-tied for fine to medium hair. Hand-tied wefts remain the better choice for thick hair that needs maximum volume.

Who Are Butterfly Wefts Best For?
Fine to medium density hair. The lightweight construction means less tension on delicate strands. If hand-tied wefts felt too heavy or bulky for your hair, butterfly wefts may be the solution.
Busy schedules. The faster installation and removal means less time in the chair — both for the initial install and every maintenance visit after.
First-time extension clients. The lightweight, comfortable feel makes butterfly wefts a gentle introduction to extensions for people who are nervous about how they’ll feel.
Active lifestyles. Colorado’s outdoor culture demands extensions that can keep up. The secure bead attachment and low profile of butterfly wefts handle hiking, skiing, and workouts well.

Why We Got Certified Early
When butterfly wefts started gaining traction in the professional extensions community, our founder Brittany Chambers made the call to certify our team immediately. Her philosophy has always been to stay ahead of innovation rather than wait for it to become mainstream — the same approach that made Fluff one of Denver’s first salons to offer mesh integration.
Every artist at Fluff who performs butterfly weft installations has completed dedicated training in this specific method. We don’t generalize certifications — if someone on our team installs butterfly wefts, it’s because they’ve been trained and certified to do so.
Is This Method Right for You?
The only way to know for sure is to have a specialist assess your hair in person. During your Hair Strategy Session, your stylist will evaluate your hair density, texture, scalp health, and goals — then recommend whether butterfly wefts (or another method) will give you the best results.
