They’re being called the fastest, most invisible extension method available — and after certifying our team and installing them on dozens of clients, we can confirm: the hype is warranted.

Here’s what butterfly weft extensions actually are, how they differ from everything else, and whether they’re right for your hair.

What Are Butterfly Weft Extensions?

A butterfly weft is a hair extension built on an ultra-thin polyurethane (PU) base instead of a traditional fabric weft. The PU base has precision-placed holes running through the center, which allow for a bead-through installation — no sewing needle, no thread, no adhesive.

The name comes from the way the weft opens during installation, resembling butterfly wings as the stylist threads beads through the holes. It’s a small detail, but it captures what makes this method different: elegance in engineering.

How Installation Works

Your stylist creates a bead foundation along a horizontal section near your scalp (similar to hand-tied weft prep). But instead of sewing a weft onto the beads with thread, the butterfly weft’s pre-made holes slide directly onto the beads. Your stylist clamps the beads securely, and the installation for that row is complete.

The result: approximately 20 minutes per row, compared to 30-45 minutes for a traditional hand-tied weft row. For a full installation, that time savings adds up significantly.

What Makes Them Different

Thinner and flatter. The PU base is significantly thinner than a hand-sewn weft. It lies closer to your scalp with virtually zero bulk. Clients consistently tell us they forget they’re wearing extensions within hours of installation.

Lighter weight. Less material at the attachment point means less weight pulling on your natural hair. This is a significant advantage for anyone with fine to medium density hair who found traditional wefts too heavy.

No sewing. Eliminating the needle and thread removes one of the most time-consuming (and skill-dependent) parts of weft installation. It also means no thread bulk at the attachment point.

Faster installation and removal. Installation is roughly 40% faster than hand-tied wefts. Removal is even faster — the beads simply unclamp and the weft slides off. This makes maintenance appointments quicker and more comfortable.
